“Put Me Back on My Bike”
Remembering the first British rider to wear the yellow jersey and the folklore of his final words. A deadly combination of heat stroke, alcohol and amphetamines caused Tom Simpson to collapse and later die on the slopes of the legendary Mount Ventoux during the 1967 Tour de France. His final words were actually “Me straps, Harry, me straps!” after his mechanic Harry Hall missed tightening his toe straps after reluctantly putting Tom ‘back on his bike’.
